14 Day Southbound Itinerary - Land Tour First Cruise Second


DAY 1 WEDNESDAY Welcome to Fairbanks, Alaska's "Golden Heart City!" Your accommodations will be at Westmark Fairbanks-Noble Street Hotel
**Please note that Westmark Hotels are non-smoking**

Your Discover Alaska program includes dinner this evening.

DAY 2 THURSDAY After a hearty full breakfast included in the Discover Alaska Package, you will be transferred to the Sternwheeler Riverboat Discovery for an exciting 4 ½ hour cruise of the historic Chena and Tanana Rivers. You will stop at the Chena Indian Village where a native guide will take you ashore for an informative tour of the area with native artisans actually working their crafts and a veteran dogsled musher who will introduce you to Alaska's favorite sport. If that's not enough, you'll also see a bush pilot demonstration. Your included lunch will be at the Chena River Landing. After Lunch, you will then be treated to one of Alaska's premier gold mining attractions, Gold Dredge #8. Your 4 hour tour will introduce you to Alaska's mining history from 1905 to the present. After watching a short video of the dredge when it was in operation, you will tour inside the dredge itself plus displays and exhibits at the Bunk House, Bath House, and Supply Center. You will see how the machinery scooped up and separated the gold from the gravel. You will also have the opportunity to pan for gold yourself. Next is an historical tour of Fairbanks and a stop at the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. This evening Discover Alaska will take you to the 44 acre Pioneer Park which you will enter via an old mining tunnel. Then follow the tantalizing aroma of prime rib, King salmon and cod to the site where you'll enjoy an all-you-can-eat dinner. Salad bar, ice tea and dessert are included. Wine and beer is available for purchase. Also included at Pioneer Park is the famed Palace Theater Show where you'll catch the antics of the colorful characters who will give you a glimpse into Fairbanks past and present.

DAY 3 FRIDAY After Breakfast, enjoy a sightseeing excursion by Luxury Holland America Motorcoach to Denali National Park. After checking into your room at the McKinley Chalet, you will enjoy lunch at the hotel. After lunch, you will depart for a Natural History Tour of Denali National Park. This tour is 4 hours in length. The exact time and tour ticket will be found in your Denali Welcome Packet-please have your ticket ready to collect. Don't forget your camera and binoculars because you will be searching for grizzly bears, moose, caribou, Dall sheep, wolf and many other small animals and birds. For those who desire a greater opportunity to observe the elusive wildlife, you may choose to upgrade to the Tundra Wilderness Tour for $99 per person. This 7 to 8 hour tour takes you deeper into the park with many more opportunities to see wildlife close up and possibly get a rare glimpse of Mt. McKinley. Passengers on the Natural History Tour will enjoy Dinner at Cabin Night Dinner Show. Passengers on the optional extended Tundra Wilderness Tour will enjoy dinner at the hotel.
Denali Tundra Wilderness Tour

DAY 4 SATURDAY This morning after breakfast at your hotel you will transfer to the Alaska Railroad Depot. Aboard the McKinley Explorer you will enjoy another sightseeing excursion through the wilderness as you travel in luxury to Anchorage. Lunch aboard the McKinley Explorer is included in your Discover Alaska package. Prior to arrival in Anchorage, your Tour Concierge will inform you of your transfer coach assignment which will take you to the Anchorage Hilton. Dinner will be waiting for you at the hotel.

DAY 5 SUNDAY A full breakfast at the hotel is included in your Discover Alaska package. After breakfast, a motorcoach will take you on a tour to view the historic points of interest in downtown Anchorage from your motor coach; then continue to the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum for an in-depth exploration of Alaska's unique aviation history. Your tour will be lead by an experienced museum staffer. Learn about the pioneers of Alaska aviation, see their restored aircraft, discover the bush pilot roots of modern day Alaska Airlines and then take a turn to fly yourself in the museum's flight simulator. Return to downtown Anchorage with a drive past Lake Hood, the busiest floatplane base in the world. Your will enjoy lunch in Anchorage. After lunch you will continue your trip to Portage Glacier where you will enjoy a journey on the mv Ptarmigan cruising across Portage Lake viewing and watching for fractures of ice breaking off the glacier. After the tour of Portage Glacier your motorcoach will continue the journey to Seward where you will board your ship. After you check in and explore around the ship, your luggage will magically appear in your stateroom. (A Discover Alaska or Holland American Representative will be on board to assist you)

Today you will traverse the Gulf of Alaska. This is your first full day aboard your luxurious Holland America floating resort. Be sure to take full advantage of all the many activities aboard and the exceptional opportunity for duty-free shopping. Tonight is the Captain's Welcome Aboard Cocktail Party and festive dinner.

As Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site, Glacier Bay National Park protects a unique ecosystem of plants and animals living in concert with an ever-changing glacial landscape. Your cruise ship will be your visitor center for this unforgettable day. Cruise from the Reid and Lamplugh glaciers to the mighty Johns Hopkins surrounded by rugged peaks and sheltering a seal pupping ground. You will marvel at nature's unrelenting power as you witness the birth of one massive
iceberg after another.

Haines... Adventure to last a lifetime, there is no question that your time spent in Haines will be enjoyed and remembered for years to come. Home of the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, is the eagle capital of the world and offers a variety of optional tours such as nature tours, kayaking, flight-seeing, and float trips. Enjoy local shopping or you can take a high-speed Catamaran to Skagway.
In the summer take part in spectacular hikes, rafting journeys on the Chilkat River, kayaking adventures on Chilkoot Lake, exhilarating jet boat rides, guided nature walks and many more activities. Plus, don't forget about fishing for Alaska's Pacific salmon.

Juneau is Alaska's state capital, but you can only reach it by air or water - no roads connect it with the rest of the world. Discover Alaska's included tour takes you through the city to the Macauley Fish Hatchery and to Mendenhall Glacier. You can observe this distinctive "drive-in" glacier from the US Forest Service observatory and enjoy a short, refreshing walk on one of the nature trails in the area.

The fishing village of Ketchikan, perched in the small space between mountains and sea, is today's port of call. Your included Discover Alaska tour will give you this town's colorful history and take you past the site of what was once the world's largest wood pulp mills to Totem Bight State Park, a former native campsite on the shoreline, where beautifully-carved totems stand silently among cedar and hemlock trees. Your guide will share native legends and history and take you through the replica of a traditional clan house.

Enjoy a relaxing day cruising the Inside Passage, a thousand miles of protected waterways with land close on each side of the ship. Explore the many fine amenities and activities aboard your 5-Star floating resort, or just kick back and watch the wonderful scenery glide smoothly by.

Upon arriving in Vancouver you will clear customs and than board a motor coach for a tour of Vancouver including Granville Island, Stanley Park, Queen Elizabeth Gardens, Chinatown, and historic Gastown. After your tour you will transfer to your hotel the Fairmont Vancouver Airport for your stay in Vancouver. A Discover Alaska representative will meet you outside of customs and direct you to your motor coach and will be at the hotel to assist you.

This morning you will board a motorcoach to begin your day-long tour to Victoria and world- famous Butchart Gardens on Vancouver Island. After a ferry ride to the island, your coach will take you on an island tour. Admission to Butchart Gardens is included in your Discover Alaska package. Later you may stroll through the charming downtown that lives up to its British-flavored name with double-decker buses, turreted castles, fine British woolens and delicate china. Overnight accommodations are at the Fairmont Vancouver Airport Hotel.

At least 2 hours prior to your flight departure time you should proceed to your airline checkin area.

Note: If a sailing date has less than 15 cabins the Alaska Land portion of the trip will not have a Discover Alaska Tour Manager, but will be Hosted by Holland America throughout the Alaska Land portion of your trip.

Due to Denali National Park Service operating guidelines, the 6-8 hour Denali Tundra Wilderness Tour will be modified to the 5-6 hour Teklanika Tour on dates before May 20 and after September 16 for the 2015 season. The fully narrated Teklanika Tour travels to Mile 30 of the Park Road to the Teklanika River Overlook. The Land+Sea Journey you are booked on could be affected by this modification.
